San Francisco (July 29, 2022) - The San Francisco Unified School District (SFUSD) is expanding efforts to recruit and hire teachers, paraeducators, clerks, and other positions throughout the district in preparation for the start of the 2022-2023 school year.
SFUSD actively recruits educators through a variety of means and has been expanding its job listings online through job boards on LinkedIn, Indeed, and EdJoin. The district offers webinars for candidates to learn more about openings, as well as in-person interview and hiring events.
SFUSD offers bonuses for specific educator roles. Candidates who are hired for Bilingual and Special Education teaching positions receive a $1,000 bonus and candidates who are placed at a High Potential School (an SFUSD school serving historically underserved communities in San Francisco and with lower rates of academic achievement) receive a $2,000 bonus.
“As a longtime educator myself, I know that teaching students and helping them achieve their dreams is one of the most rewarding careers a person can have,” said SFUSD Superintendent Dr. Matt Wayne. “We invite anyone who has the desire to work with young people in schools to consider joining our workforce. SFUSD offers competitive salaries, paid professional development, a robust benefits package, and an inclusive and equity-centered work environment.”
Similar to school districts around the state and country, SFUSD is experiencing employee shortages in most roles. To date, SFUSD has filled about 75% of nearly 500 classroom vacancies. For the 2021-2022 school year, the district filled 446 classroom vacancies and for the 2020-2021 school year, SFUSD filled about 350 classroom vacancies. There were 599 classroom vacancies that SFUSD filled in the 2019-20 school year.
SFUSD offers a number of pathways to earn a teaching credential while working in the district. SFUSD’s Pathway to Teaching Program is an intern program designed for participants to work as full-time teachers while earning their credential. In addition, the Para to Teacher program trains classified employees to become teachers in high-need subject areas. SFUSD also recruits through teacher residency programs where candidates can take graduate courses and learn from an experienced educator, then teach full-time the following year.
Since 2014, SFUSD has increased base teacher salaries by 25% without decreasing benefits. SFUSD has numerous efforts in place to support and retain educators such as through paid professional development, offering one-on-one coaching and capacity building for new teachers, bonuses, and more.
To apply for a teaching position, candidates must have a Bachelors’ degree. Teaching credentials are not needed for the initial application process.
In addition to teaching positions, SFUSD is hiring paraeducators to assist in Special Education classrooms, as well as a variety of support staff roles at schools. To apply for a paraeducator position, candidates must have a high school diploma or equivalent and additional testing. To view all open roles in SFUSD, visit careers.sfusd.edu.
About SFUSD
SFUSD is the seventh largest school district in California, educating over 56,000 preK-12 students every year. San Francisco is both a city and a county; therefore, SFUSD administers both the school district and the San Francisco County Office of Education (COE). This makes SFUSD a “single district county.”
