Happy New Year! I hope each of you had a restful summer. I am thrilled to kick off the 2022-23 school year with you as the superintendent of SFUSD.
I just completed my first month in the district, and am inspired by the work of so many of our dedicated, talented, and resilient staff. Your commitment to SFUSD students has been unwavering. I have seen this while visiting summer programs that help students get back on track after the pandemic and seeing new teachers in our Pathway to Teaching program gain real time coaching from experienced SFUSD classroom teachers. I also had the opportunity to spend three days with our administrators as we discussed our focus for the year and how we can best support our students and our schools.
I have appreciated the commitment to our students even as we continue to deal with ongoing staff shortages and problems with our EMPowerSF system. As we work to develop a shared understanding of what it means in practice to live our values of equity and antiracism, I am grateful to be in a community that is determined to work through these issues to become more united in our service of SFUSD students. I look forward to deepening this commitment through honest reflection and dialogue so that we can uplift best practices and improve upon where we might be falling short.
I am excited to be serving the students, families, and staff in this vibrant district committed to educational equity and academic excellence. Best of luck in the coming weeks. |

Draven Lee, Teacher at Grattan ES, Wins RAVE
Draven Lee, a teacher at Grattan ES, was nominated for his student-centered approach to education.
According to his nomination, Mr. Lee teaches his students patience and understanding. "Every week, jobs rotate and three or four kids are given the task of being Supreme Court Justices to remind people to follow the rules. When we need new rules, he asks us for ideas and sometimes lets us vote. He's also very patient and teaches us to be patient, too."
Read about colleagues who have been nominated and those who have won a RAVE award. You can nominate any district employee or team for recognition (except for yourself or an entire school).
