Superintendent's Monthly Digest
September 2025
SUPERINTENDENT'S MESSAGE
Dear SFUSD Community:
Superintendent Dr. Maria Su
Happy Latinx Heritage Month! Celebrated each year from Sept. 15 - Oct. 15, Latinx Heritage Month is an opportunity to highlight the cultures, traditions, and history of the Latinx community. This month and all year long we recognize the brilliance and beauty of Latinx heritage across our schools by supporting bilingual education, offering programs like Mariachi, promoting biliteracy programs through Dual Language Pathways, and the Seal of Biliteracy to recognize students' multilingual proficiency.

I also want to welcome you to our new monthly e-digest. This digest replaces SFUSD's previous monthly family and staff newsletters so that we can provide news and updates, resources, and bright spots to our entire community together. I look forward to connecting with you in our schools and this newsletter throughout the year.

In Community,
Maria

Teacher and students sitting at a table with hands raised.

We are excited that SFUSD has reached a minimum of 92% staffing threshold across all grade levels, an important and positive milestone that allows us to proceed with supplemental hiring. To ensure we continue providing high-quality education across all schools, this next phase of hiring will follow specific guidelines and timelines. Learn more.

Accurate and Timely Pay is Prioritized for Employees
Frontline and Red Rover Logos

SFUSD is using two new systems—Frontline and Red Rover—that serve as the backbone of budget, payroll, and human resource functions. These systems will better support our staff and streamline essential operations. We are deeply committed to transparency while we implement this generational project. Access the latest updates (public) and resources for staff (employee login required).

SFUSD Shares New Administrative Regulation on Supplemental Instructional Materials

Starting in the 2025-26 school year, SFUSD has a new process for reviewing supplemental instructional materials used in all subject areas, which are used to enrich or support the core curriculum, not replace it. This regulation establishes a clear process for reviewing supplemental materials to ensure alignment with Board Policy 6161.11. Access our FAQs and Webinar.

RESOURCES
Ongoing Supports for Immigrant Students and Families
SFUSD is a sanctuary school district, which means our schools are safe havens where all students are welcomed and valued, and where every child has the right to attend school, no matter their immigration status or that of their family members.

SFUSD has established clear protocols for school staff in the event that immigration officials attempt to enter our schools. At the beginning of each school year, all staff are required to review and understand these protocols so they are prepared to respond appropriately.

We work closely with the City and County of San Francisco and the California Department of Education. Access additional information and services from the San Francisco Office of Civic Engagement and Immigrant Affairs.

SFUSD Refugee and Immigrant Solidarity in Education (RISE-SF) is charged with increasing access to education for all immigrant and refugee students through the promotion of culturally and linguistically inclusive programs and services.

Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals Program (DACA) was created in 2012 to give some undocumented immigrants who came to the U.S. as children temporary protection from deportation and access to a work permit.

Request an Interpreter - SFUSD school staff, including teachers, have access to simultaneous phone interpreters through Language Line. Please ask teachers and staff for a Language Line interpreter if you need one.

Get Involved - "Be Here!" Attendance Awareness Campaign

Showing up to school every day matters for student learning, connection, and long-term success. In fact, research shows that missing just two days a month can significantly impact reading at grade level and staying on track to graduate. And did you know that improving attendance to pre-pandemic levels could recover nearly 1.5 million learning hours and bring over $18 million annually back into classrooms?

That's why in August, SPARK SF Public Schools, in partnership with SFUSD, launched a citywide campaign called “Be Here!” to emphasize the importance of strong school attendance and fostering a culture of belonging for student success and public school funding. The campaign combines a robust social media push with celebrity PSAs, physical posters, bus ads, and community partnerships. Major organizations joining this effort include the Golden State Warriors, the San Francisco Giants, Bay FC, the San Francisco Chamber of Commerce, and more. Learn more about how to get involved!

“After entering Galileo, I managed to make my first straight A’s from pure determination but also the amazing relationships and mentors that I've had the opportunity to build a rapport with. Specifically, my 9th and 10th grade English teacher, mentors from SFUSD such as Kena from QTAC, Tim from LCAP, and so many other people and peers. The people I've met have shown me so much passion and kindness, which gave me the ability to recognize how your identity and self-worth are made up of so many different aspects that cannot be confined by or determined from boundaries in academics or mental barriers.”
