Climate Action Youth Summit
Mayor Lurie, Superintendent Dr. Su, Board of Supervisors President Mandelman, CA EPA Secretary Garcia and others greeted over 3,000 attendees at the Climate Action Youth Summit held in Yerba Buena Gardens. Many of the classes were students of the SFUSD Environmental Solutionary Teacher Fellowship hosted by SFUSD's STEM Department.
Student Nutrition Services had a table where they discussed their plan for using compostable forks on Earth Day. At AccessSFUSD: The Arc you could play a recycling sorting game. At a table with Alice Fong Yu students you could answer climate trivia questions and try to win a prize by hitting a target. Lawton Elementary School students (through a Changing Landscape Unit) identified problems at Lake Merced and made recommendations on implementations needed to solve them. There were so many inspiring, green examples of student participation! |

Wellness Tip From a Yoga Teacher
Chair pose (left) and Goddess pose (right) are poses that warm and energize the entire body. Try them at home before you start your school day. Chair pose —
Utkatasana in Sanskrit — works your legs, shoulders, core, back, and arms. Goddess pose —
Utkata Konasana — works your core, thighs, hips, and glutes.
Exercise within your limits. Never force, strain, or practice through pain. Seek medical attention and advice as appropriate. |

"After entering Galileo, I managed to make my first straight A's from pure determination but also the amazing relationships and mentors I've had the opportunity to build a rapport with. Specifically, my teachers, such as my English teacher in 9th and 10th grade; mentors from SFUSD; and so many other people and peers. The people I've met have given me so much passion and kindness, which gave me the ability to recognize how your identity and self-worth are made up of so many different aspects that cannot be confined by or determined from boundaries in academics or mental barriers."

"Mission High School is my other home where I can be involved in a lot of activities and clubs. As a newcomer student my teachers and tutors have been helping a lot. I’m the president of Newcomer Club, where we have a lot of activities during our lunch time and a place where newcomer students can make more friends and people from their own country or other. I recently joined Awaken Dreamers, another club that helps immigrant students with documentation and to prepare them into their college pathway."
"Initially I didn’t think I was able to be a musician, but my teachers encouraged me to have confidence and be able to express myself through music. This is my second year in Mariachi Los Osos, the group of Mariachi that represents Mission High School, and my third year in the Mariachi program. Sometimes it is tiring, but I love to be engaged in projects."

"When I first stepped foot into Lincoln, I'd never imagined how much I would grow — academically and as a leader for my community. As a low income first-generation Asian American immigrant, SFUSD provided a safe space where I could challenge myself and gain skills to prepare me for the future with confidence. SFUSD presented many opportunities such as working as a teacher assistant, internships, and helping my community."
