SFUSD Insider | April 2025
SUPERINTENDENT'S MESSAGE
Dear SFUSD Colleagues:

April is here, which means it’s time to celebrate SFUSD Pride Month — a time to uplift, support, and affirm our LGBTQ+ staff, students, and families. We have planned a number of exciting events to celebrate SFUSD Pride Month, including our annual Superintendent’s Read Aloud, where I will introduce a children’s book about Sarah McBride, the first openly transgender member of the U.S. Congress. I encourage you to explore our SFUSD Pride Month Resource Guide for a full schedule of events and activities, lesson ideas, and ways to celebrate SFUSD Pride Month in your schools. In addition, you can request to have LGBTQ+ affirming materials sent to your school.

We also celebrate Arab American Heritage Month in April, a time to celebrate the rich culture and contributions of the diverse population of Arab Americans. National Arab American Heritage Month has been observed during the month of April since 2017. An estimated 3.7 million Americans have Arab roots, according to the Arab American Institute. The Arab heritage reflects a culture that is thousands of years old. In SFUSD we honor our Arab American staff, students, and families.

I also want to invite you to our in-person Budget and Stabilization Town Halls in April, where I will share key updates about our budget and stabilization efforts and answer your questions. You can find more details, including dates, locations, and how you can RSVP by visiting sfusd.edu/townhalls

Thank you for everything you do to make our schools inclusive and welcoming for our students and families.

In partnership,

Dr. Maria Su

SFUSD Superintendent

BRIGHT SPOTS

April is SFUSD Pride Month!

SFUSD’s 30 year-old tradition of honoring the identities and history of the LGBTQ+ community in April represents our values as a community – there’s no wrong time to celebrate Pride. This year’s theme is: We Are the Change!

This year’s Superintendent’s Read Aloud will be Door By Door: How Sarah McBride Became America’s First Openly Transgender Senator by Meeg Pincus. We are also honored that the Director of the San Francisco’s Office of Transgender Initiatives, Honey Mahogany, will share her own journey to public service with our secondary students.

We are rooted in the truth that our community of queer, transgender, and gender-expansive students and staff enrich our schools and deserve to feel seen and safe.

For a schedule of LGBTQ+ Pride activities and celebration ideas, check out our SFUSD Pride Month Resource Guide. Thank you for your support in helping us foster a safe and inclusive environment for all of our students!

Professional Development at California Academy of Sciences

Magic can happen if you bring together classroom teachers, garden educators, librarians, and after-school program staff for an evening of professional development and museum "NightLife." If the location is the California Academy of Sciences you can expect the ideas to flow.

On March 20, over 20 K-12 educators came together to develop ideas for hands-on science and community science projects at their schools. Hands-on science kits were donated from the museum to help bolster SFUSD's environmental literacy efforts.

"I love that I get to work with a wide range of student abilities at Hoover. One moment I get to help a student learn some fundamental concepts, then the next moment I get to help a student with trigonometry. Both are equally rewarding and exciting!"

"At my continuation high school, many of our students have become disconnected from reading. But just about all of them loved books at one point in their lives!  It is so gratifying to help them find a book that rekindles that excitement and joy.  When a student asks if we have more books by the same author, I have hope that they will continue to think of themselves as readers long after they graduate from high school."
