Dear High School Students,

Spring is in the air! The first day of spring is March 20, which feels just around the corner. Don't forget to adjust your sleep schedule when the clocks 'spring' forward (move one hour ahead) on Sunday, March 9. This is an ideal time of year to secure summer internships and set up plans for summer work or academic projects. Plant those seeds that later become successes.

Kind regards,

Molly, SFUSD Communications Coordinator

BRIGHT SPOTS
High School Enrichment Day at Oracle Park for 150 SFUSD Students

In late January, the San Francisco Giants and Giants Community Fund rolled out the red carpet for 150 CTE pathway students from seven high schools (Balboa, Burton, El Camino, Hilltop, Mission, O'Connell, and Wallenberg) as part of their first-ever High School Enrichment Day. Students and their teachers learned about careers in sports (off the playing field), entertainment, and business. They participated in hands-on exploration activities all over the ballpark, hosted by various departments within the organization, such as partnerships, operations, catering, and IT.

Students got a sneak peak behind the scenes of the stadium, visited the Giants clubhouse and dugout, ate a catered lunch in the stands, and attended a Career Fair — held exclusively for SFUSD students — in the Giants performance center facility. Learn more about CTE pathways.

RESOURCES
Counselor's Corner: Tips from Mariana Chavez-Picazo, Lead Counselor

We have some long months in the spring semester; here are some tips and resources to help you stay focused:

  • If you are facing a challenging time personally, find someone at school that you can talk to. This may include your School Counselor, the Wellness Center, the Principal or Assistant Principal, or a teacher.

  • Taking care of your physical and/or mental-emotional health will help you be able to focus in school, so take advantage of the support and confidential services available to you.

  • Talk to your parents, teachers, coaches, supervisors at work if you are having trouble balancing your time.

  • Remember to keep it fun too! Check out this newsletter and talk to your school counselor for opportunities to take advantage of after school and in the summer. Get involved at school! Join a club, get active and practice self-care

  • Stay focused on your education! It is one of the few things you have full control over, so take pride in it and the doors it can open.

Wellness Tip From a Yoga Teacher - Twists!

With the changing of the seasons, certain yoga postures like twists are especially beneficial to get energy flowing within your body. Try these:

-Twisted Easy Pose (above, left) - sitting cross legged on a mat or carpet, put your left hand on your right knee and gently twist while looking over your right shoulder. Repeat on the other side.

-Twisted Low Lunge (above, right) - start in a plank and then bring your right leg forward into a low lunge position. Place your left hand near your right foot and lift your right hand to the sky as you gently twist. Repeat on the other side.

Exercise within your limits. Never force, strain, or practice through pain. Seek medical attention and advice as appropriate.
TEACHER & STUDENT SPOTLIGHTS
Community Outreach Through High School Robotics

Galileo Robotics is a local FIRST Robotics Competition (FRC) team based at Galileo Academy of Science and Technology. Their outreach subteam has been working on maintaining community connections through robotics events. The team recently participated in the Day Without Walls event at Francisco Middle School, where high school students led hands-on STEM workshops using LEGO kits. This was an exciting opportunity to engage with the community and inspire the next generation of engineers.

Currently, their focus is on developing robotic manipulators for this year’s FRC game, called Reefscape. They will compete in the San Francisco Regional on March 22-23, followed by the East Bay Regional on April 4-6. The team is excited to put their hard work into action and compete alongside other teams from across the Bay Area. Follow the team on social media.

"The doors at Washington are always open. I absolutely appreciate the cafeteria and janitorial staff, who are up before my alarm even goes off in the morning, inviting the students with early commutes into the cafeteria to do homework or to just take a breather before the first bell. There are teachers at Washington who engage with their students not just as a name on their attendance list on Synergy, but as a student who exists as a personality outside of their academics. Whether I’m chit-chatting with a club sponsor post-club meeting, catching up with our counselors, reciting my 'Three highlights of the weekend' with my homeroom teacher, fist-pumping the security guard, or opening up to my AVID teacher, I’m confident that the teachers and staff do care. Washington is my second family."

-Jezuzette Ocampo, George Washington High School junior

"Teaching CTE in Arts, Media, and Entertainment is more than just developing skills for the industry—it's about empowering students to create, innovate, and shape the future. Technology is not just a tool; it’s a gateway to critical thinking, problem-solving, and real-world impact. By embracing progressive teaching and critical pedagogy, I equip students with the knowledge and creativity to thrive in an ever-evolving world."

-Henry Francisco, Arts, Media & Entertainment teacher at James Denman Middle School
