Career Technical Education (CTE) at SFUSD: Academy of Arts, Media & Entertainment (AoAME) at Philip and Sala Burton Academic High School
Eric Chow (pictured), Director of the AoAME at the Broadcast Club at Burton, shared highlights: "For the past three years, Burton's Academy of Arts, Media & Entertainment students have been recruited by CTE and SFUSD Human Resources to produce promotional videos ranging from CCSF Dual Enrollment programs, Summer Internships, and Teacher Recruitment and Student Nutrition Services. More recently, Burton's Broadcast Club has been very active in its second full year. They produce a pre-recorded weekly show that is recorded on Mondays and broadcast during Advisory on Wednesdays. Last month, SFGovTV producers came to provide technical tips and helped facilitate a multi-camera recording of an interview featuring one of our English teachers, Mr. Cooper Brown." |

Counselor's Corner: Tips from Mariana Chavez-Picazo, Lead Counselor
Have you met with your school counselor lately? Here are some questions to ask to keep you on track and some tips!
-
Can you please review the A-G & graduation requirements with me?
-
How many credits should I have at this point? What requirements/credits are missing that I need for graduation (and college)? What are my options for making up credits?
-
Make appointments to meet with your school counselor regularly and make a plan to graduate on time and ready for your post-secondary options.
-
Talk to your teachers. Remember they are there to assist you but won’t know that you need extra help unless you ask. If you’re absent or falling behind, make an appointment with your teacher to get the work you missed.
-
Review your transcript each semester to stay on track. You can view on StudentVue or ask your counselor for an unofficial copy.
Utilize this On Track Grad Guide 2024-25 to help you plan at each grade level.
If you are a senior in high school, now is a great time to explore scholarship opportunities to fund your future goals: Check out this scholarship list to get started and utilize this worksheet to keep track of your applications.

Wellness Tip From a Yoga Teacher
Having a strong core can help protect your back from strain that comes from postures involving computers and phones. You can strengthen your core muscles by incorporating plank exercises into your movement routine. Try holding a plank for 30 seconds. Be sure to 'hug' your belly button to your spine and keep your shoulders directly over your wrists in plank. Read about plank modifications and workouts.
Exercise within your limits. Never force, strain, or practice through pain. Seek medical attention and advice as appropriate. |

Celebrating School Counselors!
It's National School Counseling Week Feb. 3-7, 2025. Student Kathy Zhao, a senior at Washington High School (pictured), celebrates her counselor, Vivian Chinn:
"As an immigrant and former ELD student, I searched for resources to supplement my learning. I found support from the counseling department, AVID, and the Richmond neighborhood center. My counselor specifically went above and beyond to support me in my journey towards higher education. Even with the amount of students each counselor takes on, my counselor provided me with personalized support and ensured that the opportunities I had access to were on par with that of private schools." |

"I learn a lot here. It's fun and gives me something to do after school. I've learned pretty much everything I know about dirt bikes here. This is a very unique class and I had the opportunity to join it."

June Jordan School for Equity Students at Cleveland Elementary School
Mia Rubio (above left, pictured with elementary students) is a sophomore at June Jordan and visits Cleveland Elementary school as part of a class, taught by Mr. Scott. "I mostly help kindergarten students with art and homework. I love working with kids!" says Mia.
Scott Gonzales Cooper (above right) says, "During my first semester here as the internship teacher at June Jordan School for Equity we have organized an internship opportunity with SFUSD for some of our students to work down the street in the afterschool program at Cleveland Elementary School. So far it has been a great experience for our students to collaborate with staff and with younger kids in a new environment. I think it has challenged our students and given them a great opportunity to develop their responsibility and social skills!" |
