JANUARY 2025
SUPERINTENDENT'S MESSAGE
Dear SFUSD Families:

Dr. Maria Su, SFUSD Superintendent

Happy New Year! I am excited to welcome you and your students back to school for the spring semester. We are energized to help our students continue their learning journey.

With the start of the new year upon us, I want to remind families that the enrollment application deadline for the 2025-26 school year is only a few weeks away - Friday, Jan. 31. If your student is starting transitional kindergarten, kindergarten, 6th grade, or 9th grade in the 2025-26 school year, they will need to apply to a new school. Because we no longer have multiple application rounds, it is important that you submit your application on time. You can view resources on our website to help you find a school for your student and a brief guide on how to apply.

If you have any questions or would like additional support, you can attend our in-person enrollment workshop on Wednesday, Jan. 15 from 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the Enrollment Center office at 555 Franklin Street. At the workshop, our enrollment counselors will answer your enrollment questions and support families in filling out the enrollment application. You can also get help by contacting the Enrollment Center by phone at 415-241-6085 or by visiting their office in-person from Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

As you may know, we have been working hard to balance our budget. In my recent column, I shared that we are going to have to make hard choices about how we staff our schools and how we deliver services to students. Even with the budgetary challenges we are facing, we are committed to providing our students with a high quality education and to achieving our student outcome goals for 3rd grade literacy, 8th grade math, and college and career readiness.

I wish our students and families a great start to the spring semester.

In community,

Dr. Maria Su

SFUSD Superintendent

BRIGHT SPOTS
Immunology Research Symposium at Mission Bay Hub

Sharlene Medina, a senior at The Academy at McAteer, was part of a showcase of high school research posters in December. Students from each research group took turns presenting their research. The students also read poetry about a public health issue that was close to their hearts. Students in the cohort had graduate school mentors from UCSF and spent time during their school days learning about health, life sciences, and other STEM-aligned fields. Read about the Mission Bay Hub Program.
Youth Outreach Workers Make a Difference at High Schools!

Meet Malia Magnusen, from Ida B. Wells High School. Malia attended a school that wasn't the right fit for her, but later found Ida B. Wells, where she has flourished. She got very involved in the community and was a peer leader and a Youth Outreach Worker (YOW). The YOWs play a vital role in empowering and educating their peers to make healthy choices. Malia will be graduating in June and will be the first in her family to attend college.

"Malia is very proud of how much she has achieved over the last year. I know she has a very bright future ahead," says Elena Vasquez, Head Counselor at Ida B. Wells High School.

Our students are joyful, curious learners and our staff are kind, deeply committed educators. Our Flynn Eagles soar to new heights each and every day and I am lucky to be the principal of such an amazing school!"
