Financial Empowerment: Tips from Kingsley Yee, SFUSD Personal Finance Specialist
With Black Friday Deals coming up...POP Quiz!
Question: Seventy percent of people in which generation made an impulsive purchase last holiday season?
A. Gen Z (ages 18-27)
B. Millennials (28-43)
C. Gen Xers (44-59)
D. Baby Boomers (60-78)
Answer: Gen Z!
When asked what inspired their unplanned or impulse purchase(s) last year, 44% of purchasers say they thought the purchase was a good deal, or it was on sale. Others say it made a good holiday gift for someone else (38%); they wanted to treat themselves (29%); it was something they had previously considered buying (27%); or it was inspired by social media posts (22%)." -Bankrate
Recommendations:
1. Make some changes on your social media feed so you aren't tempted to make impulse purchases by:
- Hiding ads or mark them as 'irrelevant.'
- Unfollowing shopping pages
- Limiting engagement with shopping posts
- Modifying ad preferences
2. Set a spending limit AND stick to it.
3. Team up for group gifts. If you want to give a bigger gift, pool money with friends or siblings to split the cost.
4. Remember that the holidays are about spending time with loved ones, not buying expensive things. |

"I’m in the Health and Behavioral Sciences pathway, also known as HBS. This pathway is mainly based on different careers within the healthcare field. Through my time at John O’Connell, I've done a total of four different internships: the Promise Initiative at the VA hospital, the FACES internship at General Hospital, The Boys and Girls Club internship, and lastly The Case Study Project with the Giants.
"My experience in the HBS pathway helped me prepare myself when it came to applying to a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) program. They helped me prepare by giving me an overview of what a CNA does on a daily basis. I also learned about places they work and with whom they work, and I'm more aware of what to expect. I've felt incredibly thankful for all the support my teachers, staff, and mentors have provided over these last four years. I've been able to grow as a scholar and a person, and I've been able to grow more passionate about my career with all these opportunities I've been given."

Wellness Tip From a Yoga Teacher:
As the weather gets chilly, it's easy to forget the joys (and benefits) of being outside in fresh air. Try to fit in an open air workout or a walk outside when you can. Notice the changes in nature since you started school.
Exercise within your limits. Never force, strain, or practice through pain. Seek medical attention and advice as appropriate. |
