SF Board of Education Elects Lisa Weissman-Ward as Vice President

San Francisco (August 29, 2024) - The San Francisco Board of Education on Tuesday unanimously elected Lisa Weissman-Ward to serve as vice president for the remainder of the 2024 year.

Vice President Weissman-Ward, a public school parent, previously served as vice president of the school board in 2023. She was appointed to the Board of Education by Mayor London Breed in March 2022, and was elected to the Board for a full term in November 2022. She is currently the Associate Director of the Stanford Law School Immigrants’ Rights Clinic, where she specializes in asylum and refugee law.

“The Board of Education remains dedicated to student success, transparency, and accountability. This is what guides our efforts in ensuring that San Francisco's public schools provide nurturing environments for every student,” Vice President Lisa Weissman-Ward said. “I am honored by my colleagues' trust in re-electing me as vice president, especially during this pivotal moment for SFUSD.”

The previous vice president, Matt Alexander, became president of the Board of Education on Aug. 23 following the resignation of former President Lainie Motamedi. Also on Aug. 23, Mayor Breed appointed Phil Kim to fill the remainder of former President Motamedi’s term.

"I'm grateful to Vice President Weissman-Ward for returning to a leadership role on the Board of Education in support of San Francisco's students and families. She brings an abundance of experience and expertise to our governance team," President Alexander said. "The Board will continue to focus on advancing SFUSD's vision, values, goals and guardrails in service of the long-term success of students and San Francisco public schools."

The San Francisco Board of Education has seven members, elected at large to serve four-year terms.
