I want to share my gratitude to all of you for getting our schools ready for our students as they returned back to school. It was wonderful to visit our staff and welcome back our students during the first few days of the new school year. I am excited to work with you to continue making progress toward our student outcome goals for 3rd grade literacy, 8th grade math, and college/career readiness. I’ve appreciated seeing how our elementary classroom teachers and instructional coaches have already started implementing our new literacy curriculum, collaborating to make sure it is meeting the needs of our students.
I also want to thank you for your patience and flexibility as we continue to work collaboratively with our fiscal advisors and labor partners to hire for vacant positions. I understand that this process has been frustrating for many of you and adds to our urgency to implement sustainable financial practices that return SFUSD’s budget back to local control.
As you may know, there will be a public announcement of the recommendations for school closures, mergers, or co-locations in the 2025-26 school year on Sept. 18. I know that the announcement will be very difficult for all of us, but I am confident that we will get through this transition together. We will be sharing a comprehensive plan soon to support staff, as well as students and families, through this transition.
Thank you for all that you do in service of students and families. Please keep reading this month’s newsletter for important updates.
In Community,
Dr. Wayne

Bond Updates
San Francisco voters will consider a $790 million General Obligation bond on the November 2024 ballot that would repair and improve SFUSD facilities. The proposal puts forward significant renovations and targeted facility upgrades, and invests in healthy meals for students, technology and network improvements, outdoor learning spaces, and safe school buildings. General obligation bonds provide SFUSD schools with funds to address critical facilities improvements and are the only source for the school district to make these necessary capital upgrades.

"I had the opportunity to travel to Finland this past summer as part of a month-long Fulbright-Hays Seminar Abroad. The trip, which included 16 elementary and middle school teachers and administrators from all across the US, was designed around a central theme: Demystifying the Infrastructure of Happiness in Finnish Society. I'm looking forward to designing and implementing an experiential, inquiry-based unit about the sources of Finnish happiness with my third-grade students at George Peabody Elementary School."
