SFUSD Insider | August 2024
SUPERINTENDENT'S MESSAGE
Dear SFUSD Colleagues:
SFUSD Superintendent Dr. Matt Wayne

Happy new school year! I hope that each of you enjoyed a wonderful and relaxing summer. I am excited to welcome you back to SFUSD for the 2024-25 school year. I know that you are hard at work preparing for the beginning of the school year and are looking forward to welcoming our students back to school on Monday, Aug. 19. Please keep reading this month’s newsletter for updates about the new school year.

We start this year continuing our focus on our goals for student learning. Because of your dedication and commitment, we are making progress in reaching these goals, but we still have work to do. I am inspired by the results of our creative approaches to reaching our goals, from Each and Every Name Initiative to adopting the first new Language Arts core curricula for grades PK-8 districtwide in over two decades. We want to build on this progress to meet our goals.

I appreciate your commitment to our students even as we address major changes we are facing as a district, including the plan for school closures, mergers, or co-locations in the 2025-26 school year. I know that these are very personal and difficult changes for all of us, but I want you to know that we are committed to handling this process with the utmost care and fairness. There will be a public announcement of the recommendations for school closures, mergers, or co-locations on Sept. 18. We will share more details about what supports and resources will be put in place for staff, students, and families very soon. As we navigate this difficult transition period together, I offer a reminder of our focus and dedication in this work: to create a school district where every school is fully enrolled, fully resourced, and providing every student with a strong and supportive learning environment.

Thank you for all you are doing in service of our students and families. I wish you a happy start to the new school year!

In Community,

Dr. Wayne

BOND UPDATES

San Francisco voters will consider a $790 million General Obligation bond on the November 2024 ballot that would repair and improve SFUSD facilities. The proposal puts forward significant renovations and targeted facility upgrades, and invests in healthy meals for students, technology and network improvements, outdoor learning spaces, and safe school buildings. General obligation bonds provide SFUSD schools with funds to address critical facilities improvements and are the only source for the school district to make these necessary capital upgrades.

“I love working with all the grade levels but I am always impressed with our high school students who have been through the [Migrant Education] program… It's so rewarding to work with the kids because you see their growth, you see them when they are little and now they’re here, as an employee, working with us.”
