Happy new school year! I hope that all of you enjoyed a relaxing summer! I am excited to return for my third year as superintendent. We start this year continuing our focus on our goals for student learning. We are making progress in reaching these goals, but we still have work to do. I am inspired by the results of our creative approaches to reaching our goals, from Each and Every Name Initiative to adopting the first new Language Arts core curricula for grades PK-8 districtwide in over two decades. We want to build on this progress to meet our goals.
We are hard at work preparing for the first day of school on Monday, Aug. 19. We recognize that safe and nurturing environments are essential to fostering a joy of learning for our students in classrooms. Please review the information included in this monthly e-newsletter and other SFUSD communications to help you and your child prepare for the new school year.
For the past year, SFUSD has been focused on aligning the district’s limited resources with our goals for student outcomes. Over the summer, we have been working on creating a new portfolio of schools for the 2025-26 school year, which will include school closures, mergers, or co-locations. We will share a public update on the portfolio planning process at the Board of Education workshop on Tuesday, Aug. 27. Please note that no school closures, mergers, or co-locations will be announced at this meeting. The public announcement of the new portfolio, including closures, mergers, and co-locations, will take place in September 2024. Our team is also finalizing plans to inform affected school communities and provide support during and after this transition. If you would like to learn more right now, our Resource Alignment Initiative website is regularly updated with the latest information.
I look forward to welcoming our students back to start the 2024-25 school year and partnering with our families, staff, and school communities to serve our students.
In community,
Dr. Wayne

San Francisco voters will consider a $790 million General Obligation bond on the November 2024 ballot that would repair and improve SFUSD facilities. The proposal puts forward significant renovations and targeted facility upgrades, and invests in healthy meals for students, technology and network improvements, outdoor learning spaces, and safe school buildings. General obligation bonds provide SFUSD schools with funds to address critical facilities improvements and are the only source for the school district to make these necessary capital upgrades.

#WeAreSFUSD
"What I love most about working with SFUSD is that I was born and raised in San Francisco Visitation Valley neighborhood. Being able to give back double or even triple what was given to me throughout my years in SFUSD is truly a blessing. Working with SFUSD has shown me that even I reach only one scholar I have made a difference. I believe it is not about how far you go in life, it is who you touch along your way."
