Celebrating Asian American and Pacific Islander
Heritage Month
SUPERINTENDENT'S MESSAGE
Dear SFUSD Families:
Dr. Matt Wayne, SFUSD Superintendent

你好! Kamusta! Xin chào! Talofa! These are ways to say hello in Chinese, Filipino, Vietnamese and Samoan — some of the primary languages spoken by Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) students and families in the San Francisco Unified School District. This month in May, we recognize AAPI Heritage Month to honor and uplift the many important contributions of Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders who are essential to San Francisco’s history, present and future. In SFUSD, we honor our AAPI communities each day. Many of our schools offer Asian language programs and clubs for AAPI communities.

We are also celebrating Teacher Appreciation Week this week, though we believe in celebrating our teachers all year long! We appreciate all that our educators do to support the growth and development of our students. We encourage you to share your stories about your children’s favorite SFUSD teachers on social media and use the hashtag #ThankATeacher!

Please keep reading this month’s newsletter for other important updates and information.

In community,

Dr. Wayne

The second phase of outreach has just concluded with a virtual town hall, eight in-person community sessions, and an online survey. Thank you to everyone who provided their input!

2024 GENERAL OBLIGATION BOND
Sketch of school facilities
SFUSD is preparing to introduce a general obligation bond to the SF Board of Education for consideration and placement on the Nov. 5, 2024 ballot. A recent report from the SFUSD Facilities Division identified significant building improvement needs in schools across the district.

The bond will provide SFUSD schools with funds to address critical facilities improvements and are the only source for the school district to make these necessary capital upgrades. Read the press release or visit the 2024 General Obligation Bond website.
