San Francisco (January 8, 2024) - The San Francisco Unified School District (SFUSD) completed its Wellness Policy Triennial Assessment and found that SFUSD’s Wellness Policy achieved high scores in nutrition standards for limiting competing foods, standards for USDA school meals, and wellness promotion and marketing.
“We are pleased that SFUSD’s Wellness Policy continues to meet our high standards,” SFUSD Superintendent Dr. Matt Wayne said. “As a district, we believe in supporting the whole child, and our commitment to students’ wellness reflects that.”
Every three years, school districts assess their Wellness Policies, following the 2016 Final Rule of the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA). These assessments help create healthier school environments that boost students' well being and learning. It also makes wellness policies more transparent for the public and ensures integrity in school health programs.
The internal assessment highlighted both successfully implemented action items over the past few years and promising new initiatives currently in the planning and implementation phases, indicating continuous efforts to improve the wellness policy and its implementation. The SF Board of Education approved an updated wellness policy in June 2021 that was developed through a collaborative community process. The Wellness Policy (Board Policy 5030) meets all the provisions of the Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act of 2010 (HHFKA) and provides all schools with a framework to actively promote the health and wellness of students, staff and families. It includes guidelines related to nutrition, nutrition education, food and beverage marketing, physical education & physical activity, and staff wellness.
The Wellness Policy is meant to inspire and empower a culture shift that will increase healthy eating and physical activity among our students by creating environments that encourage and support healthy choices. Learn more about SFUSD’s Wellness Policy.
