10 insights into designing access to food in San Francisco schools
In the summer of 2017, the Design at Business (DatB) community in North America identified an opportunity to create social impact through design doing, when Angela McKee-Brown, Director of the San Francisco Unified School District’s (SFUSD) Future Dining Experience initiative, shared her work redesigning the school food system. Members instantly connected to the topic and signed up to help Angela re-imagine the dining experience for today’s students.

Warrior's David West speaks at career day in San Francisco
Career Day came with a big surprise for dozens of San Francisco high school juniors. The students are part of the district's Career Technical Education program. About 100 students from five schools practiced interviewing for a job and had professionals critique their resumes. Warriors forward David West spoke to the group about his career. He also surprised the students by admitting he had been bullied when he was their age.

How two school districts address student hunger
The San Francisco Bay Area is known worldwide as one of the most innovative and desirable places to live, but these benefits often come with a steep price tag. As the cost of living continues to soar, many families in the area are barely making ends meet, being pushed into poverty and even struggling with hunger. What’s more, research shows that children from financially insecure families are especially vulnerable to hunger, which can adversely affect academic performance, health and future success. In response, the Oakland Unified School District (OUSD) and San Francisco Unified School District (SFUSD) have partnered with national anti-hunger campaign No Kid Hungry to create a universal breakfast program in many of our schools.

Inner Richmond elementary school gets real-world Google Doodle
The Google Doodle is part of the digital landscape, but at an elementary school in the Inner Richmond, a version of the tech giant's logo has become, as they say in Silicon Valley, brick-and-mortar. A mural depicting a Google Doodle that honors the namesake of George Peabody Elementary School was revealed this morning in the school's cafeteria. Considered by many to be the "father of philanthropy," the work was installed by the Doodlers, a team of volunteer artists on Google's Doodle team.

Students walk out of SF schools in call for gun control with support of city officials
Hundreds of San Francisco’s students walked out of classrooms across The City on Wednesday to protest lax gun control laws nationally that they say put their lives and those of others at risk. The mass protest was a gesture of solidarity with Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Fla., where a former student killed 14 students and three educators a month ago.

A deeper look at the whole school approach to behavior
Classroom management is an essential tool for an effective teacher, but it’s not always easy to do well. Without an orderly classroom it’s hard for teachers with upward of 25 kids in their classrooms to lead effective lessons, help students who are struggling, and perhaps most important, to trust students. That’s why getting behavior under control was Michael Essien’s number one goal when he started as the assistant principal at Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Academic Middle School (MLK) in San Francisco.

CSU alumni profile: Vincent Matthews, Ed.D.
Vincent Matthews, Ed.D., was still in high school when, out of nowhere, he found the profession that would end up as his life's work. "My love for teaching goes back to high school. I began tutoring a couple of friends on the football team—for completely selfish reasons, I have to say," recalls Dr. Matthews, who in May 2017 took on the role of superintendent of the San Francisco Unified School District (SFUSD). "They needed a C average in order to play football, and I wanted to be sure they were able to bring their grades up. Once I saw those I was tutoring conquer a skill they weren't able to conquer previously, I fell in love with teaching."

But for students at San Francisco's Ruth Asawa School of The Arts, this year's Oscars have special meaning. "I would love to have a SOTA alum win," says Tommye Finan, a SOTA senior. "That would be amazing."
