See and hear student creativity firsthand at the annual SFUSD Arts Festival and SFUSD's mariachi showcase. These events are just a few of many that remind us of the amazing arts educators and student artists throughout our city.

Celebrating Women's History Month

One class in Mission High is proving that not all history lessons come from textbooks. Now in its second year, a class on the history of African American women teaches girls about powerful and influential African and African American women.

Mayor's Youth Jobs+ Resource Fair

Bay Area youth 16-24 years old can go to workshops on resume writing, practice interviewing and connect with internships and support services at the Youth Resources Fair on March 17.

 

Celebrating student creativity

Come see student artwork; enjoy live music, dance and spoken-word performances; and participate in hands-on activities at the annual SFUSD Arts Festival. The festival will run from March 14-21 at the Asian Art Museum.

SF Superintendent pitches achievement gap to business partners
Superintendent Vincent Matthews called on business and tech leaders Wednesday to invest in San Francisco’s public schools by improving educational and workforce opportunities for black youth. Forming partnerships to address an opportunity gap that spans decades in San Francisco and disproportionately affects schools serving large populations of black students was a goal of a breakfast and business briefing about the My Brother’s and Sister’s Keepers program, held at the LinkedIn headquarters in South of Market.

SF public schools celebrate African American honor roll students
For the past 24 years, the San Francisco Alliance of Black School Educators has acknowledged African-American students who have earned a 3.0-grade point average or higher. Tuesday night, 1,400 students of African American descent, grades 3-12 who made the honor roll will be celebrated in a ceremony.

New special education chief focused on inclusivity, classroom equity
Jean Robertson’s leadership style is summed up by her email signature: “Wholly committed in the relentless pursuit of whatever works in the life of a child.” Robertson has amassed an arsenal of experiences and accolades during her 24-year career with the San Francisco Unified School District, which has focused largely on advocating for students with disabilities. This month, she assumed the position of Chief of Special Education, which requires her to provide leadership and oversight to the redesign of special education services, programming and resources, among other things.

SF school officials stand by protections for transgender students
San Francisco education leaders have reiterated their commitment to protecting transgender students in response to this week’s announcement that the U.S. Department of Education would cease to investigate restroom-related discrimination complaints. In San Francisco, protections for transgender students have been in place for more than a decade. On Tuesday, school district leaders said this would not change and that SFUSD would continue to provide support to all of its students.

Dolby Laboratories showcases the intersection of art and science for high school students in San Francisco
Today, Dolby Laboratories, Inc. hosted high school juniors from the Arts, Media & Entertainment Academy at Philip & Sala Burton Academic High School, part of the San Francisco Unified School District. The day-long event saw students pitch ideas for film projects to Dolby’s video production and marketing team, participate in a career panel, learn about Dolby technologies, and experience some of the more than 100 labs in the company's San Francisco headquarters.

SF city youth programs get $377 million in funding over next 5 years
Hundreds of millions of property tax dollars earmarked for youth services has been awarded to dozens of San Francisco nonprofits which will help fund after school programs, provide job opportunities and fund other support for young San Franciscans for years to come, city officials announced Thursday. The programs funded include expanding the Beacon Community School strategy—an experimental model developed in New York that turns schools into vibrant community hubs through extensive programs in the mornings, evenings and weekends.

Bayview students fight for healthier food options
Members of the Black Student Union at Willie Brown Middle School recently received an award for finding solutions to what they identified as a critical issue: unhealthy eating habits among students perpetuated by a corner store directly across the street from the Bayview school. With the mentorship of several instructors at Willie Brown, the students spent the better part of three weeks at the start of the school year researching the effects that junk food has on their school community.
