There have been a lot of transitions lately, and some of them feel like a serious set back. Yet when I talk with our students and the many educators, parents and community members who support our youth, I remain hopeful for the future.

Michelle Obama's message to young people in her final speech sums up what we want for our students: "Empower yourselves with a good education, then get out there and use that education to build a country worthy of your boundless promise."

—Myong Leigh, Interim Superintendent

SF public schools calm fears about Trump’s order on immigration
The San Francisco Unified School District issued a notice Sunday to address concerns about the executive order on immigration that President Donald Trump signed last week. The school district said that the executive order, which initiated a crackdown on undocumented immigrants in sanctuary cities across the nation, “does not have any effect on how we respond to our students’ rights in San Francisco public schools.”

San Francisco school board removes rule requiring some students to attend ‘oriental school’
The San Francisco school board voted unanimously Tuesday night to remove a century-old policy requiring that Asian-American students attend an "oriental" school. The decision was intended to officially strike from the books a rule passed in 1906 mandating that children of Chinese, Korean, and Japanese descent attend an "Oriental School" in San Francisco's Chinatown.

Yesterday's 'March of the Peaceful Penguins,' as it happened
Yesterday, students from the Harvey Milk Civil Rights Academy, an inclusive elementary school in the Castro, took to the streets as Inauguration Day festivities were underway in Washington D.C. Dubbed the “March of the Peaceful Penguins,” the event was organized by Castro resident George Kelly, a longtime volunteer at the academy and the man behind Project Inscribe, the Milk Academy's World AIDS Day commemoration.

Hundreds of San Francisco students march to honor MLK
The march was organized in order for students to observe the civil rights leader’s day and to commemorate his work, legacy and message of social justice, SFUSD officials said. After the march, students are scheduled to attend lectures and workshops led by various community members in honor of King’s legacy.

Survey says SF wants social justice advocate, collaborator to lead school district
Education leaders across the nation could soon be throwing their hats in the ring to become the next superintendent of public schools in San Francisco. The search firm in charge of finding a new leader for the San Francisco Unified School District finished collecting community input last month and sent its findings to the Board of Education in several letters made public ahead of a special meeting Monday.

Navigating school inside and outside San Francisco’s juvenile hall
Woodside Learning Center looks just like a school, with desks, students, and teachers. The only difference is that students at Woodside have been arrested. Classrooms aren’t grouped by grade level, and most students only stay for two days. So teachers like Megan Mercurio give lessons students can jump right into, like today’s poetry workshop.

New school board members hopeful in the face of adversity
The San Francisco Board of Education has a busy term ahead of it. A superintendent search, citywide affordability crisis and new U.S. president who appears to favor private schools over public education are just a few of the challenges in the mix.

Why our schools need community volunteers
This holiday season, many are wondering what we can possibly do to get involved and create real change in our communities. One way to make a difference at the local level is to become a volunteer in public schools, especially schools that are under-resourced and can really use the support.

Program aimed at African-American males comes to Mission High School in S.F.
Launched by the Oakland Unified School District in 2010, the African American Male Achievement program wrapped up its first semester at Mission High School in San Francisco this month. According to the OUSD website, the program’s stated goal is to “stop the epidemic failure of African American male students” and is designed to improve their academic and life outcomes. After several academic years in Oakland, the program expanded across the bay to San Francisco for the first time this fall.
